Global Street Food - Dornbracht Edges 2009

Begleitend zur Ausstellung „Antikörper. Arbeiten von Fernando & Humberto Campana 1989–2009“ zeigt das Vitra Design Museum während der Art Basel das aktuelle Projekt „Global Street Food“ von Mike Meiré für die Dornbracht Edges Reihe, die Projekte an der Schnittstelle von Architektur, Design und Kunst beinhaltet. Das Austellungsprojekt wurde erstmalig im Rahmen der Passagen 2009 anlässlich der imm Cologne präsentiert und ist nun vom 11. Juni bis zum 12. Juli im Buckminster Fuller Dome auf dem Vitra Campus zu sehen.

„Global Street Food“ widmet sich der Faszination improvisierter Küchen im öffentlichen Raum. Urbane Fast-Food Stationen im Spannungsfeld zwischen pragmatischem Dilettantismus und Komplexität auf engstem Raum. Mike Meiré präsentiert mehrere Objekte und Straßenküchen aus verschiedenen Teilen der Welt im Buckminster Fuller Dome. Eine Ausstellung, die die skulpturale Qualität der authentischen Objekte und deren kulturelle Identität abbildet.

Die Dekontextualisierung erlaubt dabei eine Betrachtungsweise unter verschiedenen Aspekten: Aus welchen Materialien ist eine solche Kücheneinheit zusammengesetzt, welche Herkunft haben diese und wie kommunizieren sie. „So wie „The Farm Project“ angefangen hat, dem ästhetischen Minimalismus in der Küche etwas entgegen zu setzen, wollen wir jetzt mit diesen Straßenskulpturen zu einem Design inspirieren, das narrativer ist. Was passiert, wenn man die Technik nach außen legt, sie sichtbar macht und ein Objekt schafft, das eine Art Lebenssituation darstellt, einen Organismus auf engstem Raum? Die Küche als Ort der sozialen Dynamik und Transformation ist ein eben solcher Organismus. Die Miniaturisierung, das Zusammenführen von ganz unterschiedlichen Aspekten eröffnet einen neuen Zugang, ermöglicht das Denken von anderen Abläufen. Aus dieser Art Feldforschung erhoffe ich mir eine Entwicklung, die zu andersartigen Ausdrucksformen führt und zu einer Ästhetik, die Stilbrüche sucht.“ (Mike Meiré)

As an accompaniment to the exhibition “Antibodies. Works by Fernando & Humberto Campana 1989–2009” the Vitra Design Museum will be showing the current project by Mike Meiré “Global Street Food” for the Dornbracht Edges series, which includes projects at the interface of architecture, design and art. The exhibition project was presented for the first time as part of Passagen 2009 on the occasion of the imm Cologne and can now be seen from 11 June to 12 July in the Buckminster Fuller Dome on the Vitra Campus.

“Global Street Food” is dedicated to the fascination with improvised kitchens in public places. Urban fast food stations navigating the contrast between pragmatic dilettantism and complexity in the smallest of spaces. Mike Meiré will be presenting several objects and street kitchens from different parts of the world in the Buckmneister Fuller Dome. An exhibition depicting the sculptural quality of authentic objects and their cultural identity.

Here the de-contextualisation permits an approach from various aspects: Of which materials is such a kitchen unit composed, what are the origins of the materials and how do they communicate? “In the same way that 'The Farm Project’ started by countering aesthetic minimalism in the kitchen, with these street sculptures, we now wish to give inspiration to a design that is more narrative. What happens when you place the technology on the outside, make it visible and create an object that represents a type of life situation, an organism in the tightest possible space? The kitchen as a place of social dynamics and transformation is such an organism. Miniaturisation, bringing together very different aspects, opens a new access, makes it possible to think about other processes. From this type of field research, I hope for a development that leads to other types of expression and to an aesthetic that looks for breaks in style.” (Mike Meiré)
